Is My Office Chair Good for My Back in Fanwood?
A new study investigated which office chair features are better at improving spine posture while sitting. Study participants were radiographed while standing, in maximum flexion (bending forwards), and in four seated chair conditions: control, lumbar support, seat pan tilt, and backrest with scapular relief. Chiropractor Eric Chludzinski of Fanwood explains here.
The investigators found that no one feature was statistically superior with respect to minimizing spine flexion; however, they observed that seat pan tilt significantly improves pelvic posture and lumbar supports helps to some extent as well.
Overall, regardless of chair features used, sitting still involves near end range flexion of the spine, which increase stress on the spine and may be a potential injury generator in those who sit for prolonged periods. As a general rule avoid prolonged sitting. Taking breaks that involve walking around a bit periodically makes a big difference. Finding a comfortable position while maintaining good posture is the key to successful sitting ergonomics.
