Caffeinated Beverages During Pregnancy in Fanwood May Lower Birth Weight
Women have been told it is safe to drink fewer than two cups of coffee or three cups of tea per day without harming their baby, but new research suggests otherwise.
In this study, researchers analyzed data on 941 mother/baby pairs and found that for each additional 100 mg of caffeine drank during the first trimester, there was a 2.5 ounce reduction in birth weight.
Furthermore, the women who drank the most caffeine had babies who were, on average, six ounces lighter than babies born to women who drank the least caffeine. The findings suggest that expectant mothers should reduce their caffeine intake as much as possible during pregnancy.
