Diet: What's the Skinny on Schools in Fanwood That Promote Healthy Eating?
New research suggests that kids are less likely to gain excess weight if they attend a school that promotes healthier eating by serving meals that meet federal nutrition guidelines, educating students and parents about nutrition, limiting the availability of sugary drinks, encouraging water consumption, and discouraging the use of food or drink as rewards for good grades and behavior.
Lead author Dr. Jeannette Ickovics adds, "These findings can guide future school and community interventions. Childhood obesity is a serious health threat, and schools are a vital way to reach children and their families to reduce risks and promote health."
