While it's common to assume pain in one part of the body is caused by a problem stemming from the same region, it's not always the case.

In this report, researchers from the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation at the University of Florida, Gainesville identified 21 patients from a five-year period who had been referred for treatment for knee pain that was ultimately revealed to be caused by hip dysfunction.

Unfortunately, half underwent a surgical procedure to the knee that resulted in little-to-no improvement in pain and function prior to this revelation.

Doctors of chiropractic are trained to examine the whole patient in order to identify problems in other regions of the body that may either cause or contribute to the patient's chief complaint.
