Is This Why Osteoarthritis Is More Common
In The Knees and Hips?
Is This Why Osteoarthritis Is More Common in the Knees and Hips? It is generally accepted that cartilage can't repair itself from injury and wear-and-tear because it lacks its own blood supply. However, a new study has found evidence that human cartilage can, to some degree, renew itself using a molecular process similar to how salamanders can regrow a lost limb. This process-called inner salamander capacity-appears to be strongest in the ankle and less apparent in the knees and hips, which may help to explain why osteoarthritis is more common in the knees and hips than in the ankles.
