Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Eric Chludzinski, and you’re listening to the Fanwood Back Relief Center podcast. Whether you’re joining us from Fanwood, Flemington, or anywhere in between, I’m really glad you’re here today.

So let’s talk about something I’m genuinely passionate about. Athletes. Active adults. People who push their bodies hard and want to keep doing it for a long, long time. If that sounds like you, this episode is for you.

Here’s what I hear all the time in my office. Someone comes in and says, “Doctor K, I’ve been running for years, or I’ve been playing soccer, or I lift weights four days a week, and something just doesn’t feel right.” Maybe it’s tightness that won’t go away. Maybe it’s a nagging ache in the lower back, the hip, the shoulder. And a lot of times, these folks assume they just have to live with it. That it’s just part of being active.

And I’m here to tell you, that’s not true.

Now, here’s the thing about athletic bodies. They go through a tremendous amount of stress. Every time you run, jump, lift, or compete, you’re putting repetitive forces through your spine and your joints. Over time, that adds up. And when your spine isn’t moving the way it should, when joints aren’t aligned properly, your body has to compensate. Other muscles work harder than they should. Movement patterns get thrown off. And that’s usually when pain or injury shows up.

This is where chiropractic adjustments come in. When I work with an athlete, my focus is on restoring proper movement and alignment to the spine and the joints of the body. A chiropractic adjustment is a precise, controlled movement applied to a joint that has become restricted or misaligned. When we restore that movement, the nervous system communicates better, muscles can function more efficiently, and the body can do what it was designed to do.

Here’s what’s interesting. A lot of athletes think chiropractic care is only for when you’re hurt. But some of the best uses of chiropractic are actually for performance and prevention. When your spine is moving well, your body moves better. Your reaction time, your coordination, your strength output, all of these things are tied to how well your nervous system is functioning. And your nervous system runs through your spine. So keeping that spine healthy isn’t just about pain relief. It’s about performing at your best.

Let me give you a little practical advice you can start using right now. First, don’t ignore small warning signs. That little twinge in your hip, that tightness that never fully goes away after a workout, those are your body’s early signals. Address them early before they become something bigger. Second, make sure you’re giving your body real recovery time. Sleep, hydration, and rest are not optional. Your spine and your muscles heal during recovery, not during the workout itself. And third, pay attention to how you move. Poor posture during training or at your desk during the day can create the same kind of imbalances that lead to injury. Little corrections in daily habits make a big difference over time.

Now, when should you actually come see us? If you’ve had a recent injury, even something that seems minor, it’s worth getting evaluated. A joint that isn’t moving correctly after a strain or a fall can cause problems down the road if it’s left unaddressed. Also, if you’re dealing with recurring pain in the same area over and over, that’s a pattern your body is trying to show you. That’s a great time to come in and let us take a look at what’s going on with the spine and figure out a plan together.

At Fanwood Back Relief Center, we see athletes and active adults of all kinds, from weekend warriors to competitive runners to people who just love staying active and want to keep doing it for decades to come.
