Why Posture Matters More Than Ever in a Screen-Focused World

Episode Notes:

Dr. Eric Chludzinski of Fanwood Back Relief Center in Fanwood, New Jersey explores how our increasingly screen-dependent lifestyles are taking a serious toll on posture and spinal health. From morning phone checks to hours at a desk, nearly every daily habit contributes to postural stress that builds up over time. Dr. Chludzinski explains the mechanics behind why prolonged screen use puts the body in compromising positions and what that means for long-term back and neck health. Listeners will come away with a clearer understanding of how their daily routines may be silently affecting their spine, and what steps they can take to start making a change.

Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Dr. Eric Chludzinski, and you’re listening to the Fanwood Back Relief Center podcast, coming to you from right here in Fanwood, New Jersey. Today I want to talk about something that affects just about every single person listening to this right now. And I mean that. We are living in a world that is more screen-focused than ever before, and your posture is paying the price for it.

Think about your day for a second. You wake up and check your phone. You sit at a desk for hours. You drive. You come home and watch TV or scroll again. And through all of that, your head is creeping forward, your shoulders are rounding, and your spine is working overtime just to hold you upright. Over time, that adds up to real problems.

Now here’s the thing a lot of people don’t realize. Your head weighs somewhere around ten to twelve pounds when it’s sitting directly over your shoulders, right where it belongs. But for every inch that head drifts forward, the effective load on your neck roughly doubles. So if your head is just two or three inches forward, which is incredibly common with phone and computer use, your neck and upper back muscles are working as if they’re supporting something much heavier. Day after day. Hour after hour. That’s why so many people walk in to see me with neck pain, headaches, tight shoulders, and upper back tension, and they have no idea why.

Here’s what’s interesting. Posture isn’t just about looking confident or sitting up straight because someone told you to. Your posture directly affects your nervous system, your breathing, and even your energy levels. When you’re slumped forward, your chest cavity is compressed. Your lungs can’t fully expand. You’re taking shallower breaths without even knowing it. And your brain is getting less oxygen than it should. People often tell me they feel foggy or fatigued in the afternoon, and sometimes posture is a big piece of that puzzle.

So what can you actually do about this starting today? First, become aware of your head position when you’re on your phone. Try to bring the screen up to eye level instead of dropping your chin down to meet it. Even small changes in how you hold your device can take a lot of stress off your neck. Second, set a reminder to get up and move every thirty to forty minutes if you’re sitting at a desk. Just stand up, roll your shoulders back, take a few deep breaths, and reset. Your spine was designed to move. It doesn’t love being stuck in one position for hours on end. Third, think about your workspace setup. Your monitor should be roughly at eye level, and your feet should be flat on the floor. Little adjustments in your environment make a real difference over time.

Now, if you’ve been dealing with neck pain, headaches, or that nagging tension between your shoulder blades, that’s your body telling you something is off. And that’s exactly where chiropractic care comes in. At Fanwood Back Relief Center, we look at your posture, your spinal alignment, and how everything is functioning together. We offer chiropractic adjustments, including gentle options like Arthrostim and Impulse adjusting, as well as myofascial release and intersegmental traction therapy, which are wonderful for releasing the muscle tension and stiffness that builds up from prolonged sitting and screen time. Every care plan we put together is tailored to you specifically, because no two spines are the same.

You don’t have to just live with the aches and stiffness. And honestly, the sooner you address posture issues, the easier they are to correct. Waiting tends to make things more complicated.

So if you’ve been putting off getting checked, I’d love to see you in the office. We’re right here in Fanwood, New Jersey, and we’re always welcoming new patients.
