Why Sitting Too Much Is Hard on the Body

Episode Notes:

In this episode, Dr. Eric Chludzinski of Fanwood Back Relief Center breaks down why prolonged sitting is one of the most overlooked threats to your spinal and overall health. Most people sit for hours each day without realizing the cumulative strain it places on their muscles, joints, and posture. Dr. Chludzinski walks listeners through what happens to the body during extended periods of sitting and why it matters for your long-term wellbeing. He also discusses how chiropractic care, myofascial release, trigger point therapy, and other hands-on approaches offered at Fanwood Back Relief Center can help address the damage that builds up over time. Whether you work a desk job or simply spend a lot of time seated, this episode offers practical insight to help you take better care of your body.

Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Eric Chludzinski, and you’re listening to the Fanwood Back Relief Center podcast. Whether you’re joining us from Fanwood, Flemington, or anywhere in between, I’m really glad you’re here today.

So let’s talk about something that affects just about everyone listening right now. Sitting. Specifically, sitting too much. And I know what you might be thinking… everybody sits. It’s just part of life. You drive to work, you sit at a desk, you come home and sit on the couch. It feels harmless. But here’s the thing, what feels comfortable in the moment can quietly cause some real problems over time.

Let me break this down for you.

Your spine is designed to move. It’s built with curves, with joints, with discs, all of it working together to keep you upright, flexible, and pain-free. But when you sit for long stretches, especially in a slouched or forward position, you’re putting your spine in a position it was never meant to hold for hours at a time.

Here’s what’s interesting. When you’re sitting, the pressure on your spinal discs is actually higher than when you’re standing. That might surprise you. People assume lying down is worst, or standing all day is the hardest. But prolonged sitting, especially with poor posture, loads those discs in a way that adds up over time.

Now, it’s not just your discs. The muscles in your hips, called your hip flexors, get tight and shortened when you sit a lot. And your glutes, the muscles in your backside that are supposed to support your pelvis and lower spine, they kind of switch off. They stop firing the way they should. So you end up with tight muscles pulling from the front and weak muscles that aren’t doing their job in the back. That imbalance is a recipe for lower back pain, hip discomfort, and even pain that travels down the leg.

And then there’s your neck and upper back. Think about how most people sit at a computer. Head forward, shoulders rounded. For every inch your head drifts forward from your center of gravity, the effective weight your neck has to support increases dramatically. So that head of yours that weighs around ten to twelve pounds normally, starts feeling like much more to your neck and upper spine. That’s why so many people who sit at desks all day end up with tension headaches, neck stiffness, and upper back tightness.

So what can you do starting today? A few simple things.

First, get up and move. Try to stand up and walk around for just a few minutes every thirty to forty-five minutes. Set a timer if you need to. Your spine will thank you.

Second, pay attention to how you’re sitting. Sit back in your chair. Keep your feet flat on the floor. Try to keep your ears over your shoulders, not out in front of them.

Third, stretch your hip flexors. A simple kneeling lunge stretch held for twenty to thirty seconds on each side can make a real difference if you do it consistently.

Now, here’s when it’s time to come see us. If you’re already dealing with low back pain, stiffness when you get up in the morning, neck tension that won’t go away, or that nagging ache that starts in your back and moves into your leg, those are signs your spine needs some attention. Don’t wait for it to get worse.

At Fanwood Back Relief Center, we work with people every day who are dealing with exactly these kinds of issues. Through traditional chiropractic adjustments, we help restore proper motion to the joints of your spine, take pressure off irritated nerves, and get your body moving the way it’s supposed to.
