In this episode, Dr. Eric Chludzinski of Fanwood Back Relief Center explores the surprising power of walking as a tool for spinal health. From improving posture and circulation to reducing stiffness and supporting the discs in your spine, walking offers benefits that are hard to match with any other low-effort activity.
Dr. Chludzinski breaks down exactly why this everyday movement matters so much for your back, and how to make the most of it no matter your fitness level. He also shares how chiropractic care and supportive therapies like myofascial release and trigger point therapy can complement a regular walking routine for even better results.
Whether you are dealing with occasional back discomfort or simply want to be proactive about your spinal health, this episode gives you practical, accessible steps you can start using today.
Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Eric Chludzinski, and you’re listening to the Fanwood Back Relief Center podcast. Whether you’re joining us from Fanwood, Flemington, or anywhere in between, I’m really glad you’re here today.
So let’s talk about something simple. Something almost everyone can do. And something that has a genuinely powerful effect on the health of your spine. We’re talking about walking. That’s right, just plain old walking. No gym membership required. No special equipment. Just you, a good pair of shoes, and a little bit of time.
Now, I know what some of you might be thinking. Walking? That’s it? But here’s the thing, when it comes to spinal health, walking is one of the most underrated tools we have. And I want to explain why, because once you understand what’s actually happening inside your body when you walk, I think you’ll look at that evening stroll a little differently.
Let’s start with how your spine actually gets its nutrition. Here’s what’s interesting, the discs in your spine, those cushion-like pads that sit between each vertebra, they don’t have a direct blood supply the way your muscles do. Instead, they rely on movement to absorb nutrients and push out waste. Think of it like a sponge. When you move, you squeeze that sponge, and fresh fluid moves in. When you’re sedentary, that sponge just sits there, slowly drying out.
Walking creates that rhythmic, gentle compression and decompression in your spine that keeps those discs hydrated and healthy. Every step you take is actually feeding your spine. And that’s not something you can get from sitting at a desk or resting on the couch.
Now here’s another big one. Walking strengthens the muscles that support your spine. Your lower back, your core, your hips, your glutes. All of these muscles work together to hold you upright and protect your vertebrae from stress. When those muscles are weak, your spine has to take on more of the load itself. And that’s when things start to break down. That’s when people start coming into my office with chronic low back pain, stiffness, and that nagging ache that just won’t quit.
Walking, done consistently, builds a natural support system for your spine. It’s low impact, which means it’s easy on your joints, but it’s active enough to actually condition those stabilizing muscles over time.
And let’s not overlook posture. When you walk, especially when you walk with intention, head up, shoulders back, arms swinging naturally, you’re reinforcing good postural habits. Compare that to sitting hunched over a screen for eight hours, and you can see why movement matters so much.
So what can you do starting today? Well, if you’re not walking regularly, just start small. Ten to fifteen minutes a day is a great beginning. Build up to thirty minutes most days of the week. Walk outside when you can. The uneven terrain of a sidewalk or a park path actually engages your stabilizing muscles more than a treadmill does. And pay attention to your posture while you walk. Keep your chin level, your chest open, and your steps comfortable.
If you’re already dealing with back pain or stiffness, walking can still help, but I’d encourage you to get evaluated first. Sometimes there’s an underlying issue in the spine, a misalignment, or what we call a subluxation, that’s making movement harder or more painful than it should be. A chiropractic adjustment can help restore proper motion and alignment so that when you do walk, your body is moving the way it’s designed to.
That’s really what we focus on at Fanwood Back Relief Center. Manual chiropractic adjustments that restore proper spinal function. When your spine is aligned and moving well, the benefits of walking multiply. Everything works better together.
We see patients at our Fanwood location and our Flemington location, so wherever you are in the area, there’s a good chance we’re not too far from you.
If you’ve been putting off getting checked out, let this be your nudge. Give us a call, stop by, or visit our website to schedule a time. We’d love to meet you and help you move better, feel better, and live better.

Dr. Eric is very helpful and strives to fix your pain
The staff is great and Dr Eric is great! There are better and better results with every visit.
This place was recommended to me and Dr. Eric is so kind, courteous and empathetic. I improved soon after my first visit from pain and stiffness in my back as I have scoliosis. My flexibility is better too. He's great!
Nothing but great interactions from me. The Doctor is awesome. Went in and in the 1st 10 minutes he xray me and found what the issues were. He then relived me of weeks of pain. Again he is awesome!! I recommend him to all my friends and family.
I went to Dr Eric after having experienced several episodes of dizziness without any explanation from any MD I had seen including cardiac, ENT and family doctor. Did some of my own research and decided to try out a chiropractic approach unsure of where it was going to go. After 2 weeks of adjustments I have not had any more episodes as I had previously been experiencing. Dr Eric explained how his treatments may help and how it helps the entire physiological system. I am still his patient about 1/4 of the way thru my treatments but I am overall feeling better and appreciative of what he has done for my health.
Takes the time to understand what’s going on and explains treatment clearly. I’ve seen a noticeable improvement in my mobility and pain levels. Highly recommend.
