What Does An Adjustment Do?

What does the chiropractic adjustment
accomplish? The chiropractic adjustment
puts motion into an area of the spine
that has not been moving properly.
When your spine gets injured, the joints
get locked down and sometimes they don’t
move like the other ones that are
functioning normally. When the
adjustment is applied, it puts motion to
that area to allow the joints to glide
properly. So if the area is injured,
locked down, inflamed,
irritating surrounding structures, the
motion of that joint now will allow the
body to heal properly. How is it found?
Well, there’s a variety of measures that
I use to find an area of spine that’s
not moving properly. Number one is
motion. Motion palpation. Feeling the
area. See if there is a dynamic motion
in each joint. Also visually looking at
the spine to see if one side is raised
more than the other indicating that
there’s any type of local tissue
inflammation.
Also different range of motion tests,
orthopedic tests, and lastly there’s
X-ray. You can’t see motion on X-ray,
but what you can see is the result of
the spine not moving properly over time.
Areas of biomechanical stress will have
degenerative bone, will have decreased
joint spaces. When the spine has not
been moving appropriately for a period
of time, these degenerative changes
happen. Bone remodels, tissue remodels,
and you can see a lot of these changes
over time on X-ray. So, by using these
measures, I can determine specifically
where to apply the proper adjustment in
the right direction with the right
amount of force. And over time, it
allows that joint to function properly
and allows the body to heal properly and
